 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'ni April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), was an American Tejano singer. Her contribution to fashion and music have made her the "Queen" of Tejano music. Selena is among the most famous Mexican-American entertainers of the 20th century. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin charts of songs. Some media outlets described her as the "Tejano Madonna" for her clothing choices. She also is among the most influential Latin music artists of all time and is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest member of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut on the scene of music as one of the members of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla, Suzette Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was frequently accused of being a snob and was denied bookings in venues across Texas for performing Tejano music, which is a male-dominated genre. After being awarded the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained notoriety. In 1989, she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album entitled Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her primary music producer and songwriter. Entre a Mi Mundo was a top-ranked album in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive months. The critics of the music called it the "breakthrough recording" of her career due to its commercial success. One of the singles, "Como la Flor", was a hit and became her signature song. Live! (1993) won the award for Best Mexican/American album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to win this award. Amor Prohibido became one the most-sold Latin albums in the United States in 1994. It was also credited with the initiation of Tejano music's first commercial phase. It became one of Latin music's most popular subgenres.
